Big thanks to Wonderful Indonesia for hosting us this year on the #TripofWonders. This is a bonus before I release some videos of the unbelievable world we saw underwater. Stay tuned! Indonesia has some great street food, and I m always trying to hunt down the weirdest, strangest, most interesting foods I can find. This lead us to chewing on the Betel nut (not Beetle nut, though pronounced the same), a green golfball sized fruit of a Areca Palm, that is suppose to be addictive, and give you sexual prowess. I first saw people chew it in Taiwan. There, it was so famous they made a documentary called Betel Nut Girls, which was about the naked girls standing on the side of the road selling them to truck drivers. All throughout Asia though, you can see the orange stains of betelnut juice on the streets, and all over the teeth of people of locals. It is consumed much like chewing tobacco, and slowly turns teeth orange, rots the gums, and causes cancer. Yum. The up side of its effects is that it is a stimulant, and it keeps you awake. Also, the word on the street is that an orange smile is attractive. Locals chew away, spitting violently orange mouthfuls of saliva every few minutes, and look like they just took a bite out of someone s jugular vein. Sexy. This beautiful abandoned town is one of many located on the banks of the Yesa Reservoir in Northern Spain. Constructed sometime in the 11th or 12th century, Esco ( or Escó) was abandoned 50 years ago because of the decision to dam a nearby river. Exploring this location was on my urbex wish list, the bright blue water, and crumbling cathedral caught my eye, and I was hoping we could head that direction and make a travel vlog about it. When we arrived to the ruins, we found exactly the experience we were looking for. No one was there, and we could explore in peace. Generally these places have a scary, or haunted vibe to them. Esco was peaceful, beautiful, and completely in ruins. Every house was abandoned except one, where a local sheep farmer had repaired one enough to live in. A man alone, living in a ghost town. This abandoned city was a wild adventure. Soooo happy we could get into the tower. It made the trip. What do you think?
