Iyasume Musubi is a wonderful place to eat local Hawaii Japanese food in Honolulu. Get more details here: http://migrationology.com/2014/03/iyasume-musubi-taste-delicious-local-food-heart-waikiki/ Waikiki is not exactly a gem when it comes to local Hawaii style food. Sure there are some good restaurants that serve Japanese food, but don t expect to find good Hawaii food (I m talking Hawaii food not Hawaiian food) when you re in Waikiki - for that you need to head out of Waikiki and go somewhere else in Honolulu. But after hearing about Iyasume Musubi, I decided I needed to go check them out. Located in the heart of Waikiki, Iyasume Musubi serves a menu of mostly Japanese style local Hawaii food, and as the name suggests, musubi is one of the most popular things to eat there. The restaurant is very small, and most of the people get their food for takeaway. But myself, having plenty of time, I decided to eat there, and luckily there was a spare table available when I arrived. I immediately noticed the the beautiful stack of bentos on the table, and to the left of that, was a beautiful tray of SPAM musubis - and that s exactly what I came for. So at Iyasume Musubi, there s actually an entire menu of different rice balls (musubis), that you can order, and some of them are stuffed with some really delicious ingredients, but again I came mostly to eat the SPAM. There were three different types to choose from; the original classic, the SPAM ume, and finally the bacon and egg SPAM. At first I began with an original and an ume (which is a Japanese pickled plum sauce), and I also ordered one of the bentos which was filled with rice, fried chicken, and some small sides. I first dug into the original SPAM musubi. Unlike at some places where you get a full block of rice, at Iyasume, it was more of a ball of rice - and it wasn t just any rice, it was some of the best rice I ve ever had in my life - somehow they cooked the rice to absolute perfection - it was moist, and each individual grain stood out - yet at the same time each grain was soft but not mushy. Okay I don t really know how to explain how good the rice was, but I ll just tell you, it was some of the best rice I ve ever had in my life. I also really like that Japanese pickled plum sauce, with SPAM, and a slice of cucumber, all wrapped into seaweed - that was quite a wonderful complementary combination. As for the bento, again the rice was beyond stunning, cooked with such precision and care. The piece of salmon was delicious. I guess I m overall not a huge fan of fried chicken that sits for too long, it s so much better if you eat fried chicken fresh out of the oil. So overall the fried chicken wasn t as good as it could have been, had been hot and fresh, but it was still good. And after I had completed two musubis, and one bento box, I somehow had the urge - that wouldn t go away - to try the bacon and egg SPAM musubi. I reached over to the tray, picked out the fattest one, and sunk my teeth into that absolute beauty of a treat. It was the entire Hawaiian breakfast in one easy to hold food - fantastic! There are many kinds of kalguksu, but this version is made with chicken (dak in Korean). The noodles are made from scratch, which makes this dish very special and welcome in any home.

Ray s Kiawe Broiled Chicken roasts some tasty huli huli chicken in Haleiwa, Hawaii. When you visit Haleiwa, Hawaii, there are some great choices for places to eat - there are some nicer high-end dining restaurants - but the places that serve the best food are usually the small hole in the wall spots. Though it only happens on the weekends Ray s Kiawe Broiled Chicken, is one of the best places in town, or even on the island of Oahu, to eat the Hawaiian style grilled chicken known as huli huli chicken. On Saturday and Sunday, in the parking lot of the main Malama supermarket in Haleiwa, Ray s sets up its grilling production. The grill is probably one of the most amazing grills you ll ever see in your entire life - they literally took an entire truck trailer - and I m talking the construction sized trailer - and turned it into a massive rotisserie chicken grill. They can literally cook, or shall I say roast, on entire flock of chickens at one time. For food lovers like you and I, their grill is like a trophy of culinary triumph. Anyway let me get back to the huli huli chicken. To the chicken is first marinated in a combination of pineapple juice, soy sauce, sugar, and some other ingredients and seasonings. This marinade gives the chicken an amazing flavor, that s not actually too strong, but just subtle, sweet and sour, and of course nice and salty from that soy sauce. When you arrive to Ray s Kiawe Broiled Chicken, there s usually a continuous line, but since most people take away, and since the menu is so concise, the line usually moves very quickly. You really only have a couple of choices of what to eat, you can get a full huli huli chicken, a chopped huli huli chicken, the special sauce, and their pineapple coleslaw. Of course there s rice also available. I decided to go for the whole chicken, and chopped so that we could eat it immediately, and also a side of the special sauce and pineapple coleslaw. I was actually going to eat right then and there, but unfortunately there were no seats, so I decided to jump back in the car and head to the beach. That chicken smelled amazing. Kiawe is actually the Hawaiian word for mesquite wood - the chicken is roasted in the fragrant coals and smoke of mesquite - another dimension of flavor. The chicken was cooked to perfection, it was nice and juicy, and a bit oily, but it wasn t overcooked. The meat was incredibly flavorful and so juicy even the white meat. The special sauce tasted mostly like a combination of soy sauce and a hint of vinegar. That salty and sour flavor on pieces of chicken made it really tasty. Overall Ray s Kiawe Broiled Chicken serve some delicious huli huli chicken, and if you happen to be in Haleiwa, Hawaii, on the weekend, it s worth grabbing a chicken or two for the beach. Get all the details for this gai yang (ไก่ย่าง), Thai grilled chicken recipe here: http://wp.me/p4a4F7-2fE There are few things in this world more satisfying than sitting down to devour a full juicy grilled chicken, especially if it s a Thai grilled chicken! Grilled chicken is one of the many very popular Thai street food dishes, and on the streets of Thailand you ll find gai yang (ไก่ย่าง) sold at countless carts throughout the country. It s often eaten along with som tam (green papaya salad) and sticky rice, but you can also just eat it as pure delicious protein. For this recipe, it s best to marinate your chicken overnight, and then grill it the following day, but if you don t have time to wait until the next day, just make sure you marinate your chicken for at least a few hours. The marinade includes a delicious combination of herbs like lemongrass, black peppercorns, and coriander roots, which are all pounded together to create a paste. Then you add in some soy sauce and palm sugar to sweeten and salt the marinade. In this Thai grilled chicken recipe, I m of course using whole chickens, but if you wanted to use already cut chicken pieces, I m sure this recipe would still work fine. If you use whole chicken like I did, you first have to butterfly cut the chickens so they lay flat, which will help in the grilling process, and also ensure that every part of the chicken is layered in your delicious marinade. After marinating the chicken it s time to get started grilling. You want a nice low and ever heat for grilling. I first lit my charcoal, but then I had to tone down the hot coals using some leftover ash to make the fire less hot, so it wouldn t burn the skin. Once your grill is ready to go, start grilling your chicken. Monitor the chicken closely, but try to wait for at least around 20 minutes before you make your first flip - flipping the chicken too frequently will make it lose some of its delicious juices. Also, as the chicken cooks, you can continue to baste it with that extra marinade left in the pan. When the chicken is grilling, you can get started on the gai yang sauce (known in Thai as jim jaew). It s a tamarind based sauce, mixed with toasted sticky rice, chili flakes, sugar, and fish sauce, so it s sweet and tangy, and goes extremely well with the salty grilled chicken - Thais know how to make amazing sauce combinations! My chicken took about 1.5 hours to finish grilling, but depending on how hot your charcoal is will determine how long it takes for you. Just make sure the gai yang (ไก่ย่าง) is cooked all the way to the bone, but don t overcook it to the point where it s not juicy. Final step is to take the grilled chicken off the grill, and chop it up using a big Chinese cleaver. I m still practicing how to perfect my Thai street food gai yang (ไก่ย่าง) chopping skills, but I can say that it s a lot of fun. Here are the ingredients that you ll need for this Thai chicken recipe, but be sure to see the full recipe for more details: http://wp.me/p4a4F7-2fE 2 whole chickens (1.8 kg. each) Bamboo sticks or skewers Charcoal Grill Marinade 4 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon fish sauce 2 tablespoons palm sugar 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce 8 tablespoons water 4 heads garlic (30 - 40 cloves) 2 stalks lemongrass 2.5 tablespoons black pepper corns 8 coriander roots (optional) Gai Yang Sauce 1.5 tablespoons khao kua 1.5 tablespoons chili flakes 1 tablespoon of sugar 3 tablespoons fish sauce 8 tablespoons tamarind water few sprigs of cilantro Music in this video courtesy of Audio Network. TBT... This is my first vegetarian recipe! Special thanks to Julia for being a wonderful guest chef! Seriously, the recipe is so simple. One pan, super healthy and is ready in less than 20 minutes! If you are not a vegetarian, you can also cook some chicken or shrimp and add it to the meal! Deeeelicious. Woo hoo first vegetarian recipe I’ve made a video of! And it’s DELICIOUS! Don’t worry though, if you need some meat, add chicken or shrimp to the dish and you certainly won’t regret it!! So the ridiculously easy written recipe for the healthy, delicious vegetarian dish is: 1 cup quinoa (be sure to rinse if the box does not say pre-washed) 15. oz can of black beans, rinsed and drained 2 tomatoes 1 yellow onion 1/4 cup of cilantro, chopped 1 tsp salt/pepper 1 lime 1 tbl olive oil Now for the 3 really ridiculously easy steps: 1. Put your olive oil and onions in a medium sauce pan. Saute for 2-3 minutes. Add the tomatoes, stir and cook another 2 minutes. 2. Add your quinoa, salt, pepper and one and a half cups of water. Stir. Cover. Simmer for 14 minutes, or until the quinoa has absorbed all the water. 3. Add the cilantro and beans. Stir. Cook just a minute so the beans can warm up. Serve!!! Add fresh lime to the table so everyone can add as much as they would like. Could that be any easier? Cook some chicken or shrimp if you’re not a vegetarian and add it into the mix at the end! Very healthy, very filling and super delicious. Voila!

There are so many delicious foods to eat when you are in Hawaii. And one of the most famous things to eat when you drive around the north shore of the island, is at one of the many shrimp trucks. There are quite a few different trucks to choose from, and there s a huge debate as to which one is the best. But among the handful of different shrimp truck options, one of the most famous is Giovanni s Shrimp Truck. I have driven past this shrimp truck in Kahuku many times, but for some reason I have never stopped before to eat there. One reason is because, I would normally fill up on other plate lunches or Hawaiian poke from Kahuku Superette (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIvn7n7cIeQ) before ever arriving at one of the famous shrimp trucks. But little did I know, there is now a second branch of Giovanni s Shrimp Truck in Haleiwa, Hawaii, and that s exactly where I happened to be when I saw it. So I didn t get to go to the original one, but many of the reviews I read said that they use the exact same recipe. One morning we decided to go to their truck and find out what the hype of the north shore shrimp trucks were all about. I arrived just as they opened, so that we could get the most fresh food, and also so that we wouldn t have to wait in line - sometimes there can be big lines waiting for the shrimp trucks in Hawaii - especially when a big bus of tourists unloads to eat there. Their menu is quite simple, you just have a choice of shrimp scampi, the hot and spicy version, or the lemon shrimp recipe. Though the hot and spicy was tempting, I decided to go for the most famous recipe, shrimp scampi. My lunch came on a plate with two scoops of rice, partnered with 12 succulent shrimp, all anointed in an extreme amount of garlic caked on. The aroma was impressively garlicky, and as a garlic lover I could not wait to eat them. Some people decided to take the shell off the shrimp before eating them, but we decided to eat the whole thing with the shell on, that way you don t miss any of that delicious garlic. The side of hot sauce was alright, but it was a little too vinegary for me, so I don t think it went all that well with the shrimp. I m not an expert when it comes to the shrimp trucks on the North Shore - this was my first time to eat at one. But, for my first time eating at Giovanni s Shrimp Truck, I can say I really enjoyed the shrimp scampi, and I would definitely come back to eat it again.
