Nang Loeng Market (ตลาดนางเลิ้ง) is one of my favorite market areas in Bangkok. Read more here: http://wp.me/psd9b-4O9 There are many many markets and street food areas in Bangkok, but one of the oldest and most preserved in the city, is Nang Loeng Market (ตลาดนางเลิ้ง). Located in the central part of the city, the community has been around a couple of hundred years now. The market itself was opened officially in 1900, and since then it has been a gathering place for people in the community to socialize and eat. There are many options for food at Nang Loeng Market (ตลาดนางเลิ้ง), and there s actually an entire food court that s opened at lunchtime, but my favorite restaurant in the area, one that I keep coming back to time and time again is the rice and curry restaurant on the corner known as Khao Gaeng Ruttana (ข้าวแกงรัตนา http://www.eatingthaifood.com/2012/06/thai-rice-curry-bangkok-nang-loeng-market/). This street food rice and curry restaurant has been around for a long time, and it has some serious character to it. It s the type of place where ancient fans are wobbling back and forth, there are cobwebs hanging in the rafters, and the food is always outstanding. Though there s plenty of food to try at Nang Loeng Market (ตลาดนางเลิ้ง), I can t help myself heading straight to eat rice and curry. When you eat Thai rice and curry, you don t always know what will be on the menu, you just have to go to the restaurant, look at the dishes that are available for the day, point to them, and order them. At Khao Gaeng Ruttana (ข้าวแกงรัตนา) you can either choose to order for takeaway and they will pack your food into plastic bags, or you can choose to sit down and eat right there. I like to eat there to enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant and the awesome atmosphere. I ordered a number of things this meal, including a fish cooked in chili sauce, a curry of coconut milk and lotus stems, but my favorite thing of the meal was the yam makua yao (ยำมะเขือยาว), a salad made of roasted eggplant mixed with chilies, dry shrimp, shallots, and all dressed in lime juice and fish sauce. If that s already not good sounding enough, I ordered it with a hard boiled egg on the bottom, which was soft cooked so the egg was still slightly runny on the inside yolk. It was absolutely sensational, so good that I could not resist ordering a second plate to devour while I was there. It was amazing. If you visit Bangkok and are interested in exploring food and history, Nang Loeng Market (ตลาดนางเลิ้ง) is one of the best places I recommend to visit. Like I mentioned, there are many places to eat, depending on your preference, like egg noodles or tom yum noodles, but my absolute favorite spot is Khao Gaeng Ruttana (ข้าวแกงรัตนา) for their delicious Thai rice and curry dishes. Do some exploring and enjoy Nang Loeng Market (ตลาดนางเลิ้ง). Nang Loeng Market (ตลาดนางเลิ้ง) Open hours: Around 8 am - 3 pm How to get there: Nang Loeng Market is not close to any mass transit train stations, so it s easiest to hop in a taxi and go directly there. It s pretty close to Democracy Monument (อนุสาวรีย์ประชาธิปไตย), about a 10 minute walk. Music in this video courtesy of Audio Network Are you interested in more Thai food? Full recipe: http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/kimchi-hot-dog Korean fusion food Kimchi hot dog! Today s recipe is a fusion dish I created. It s pretty simple, but adding spicy, sour kimchi to your hot dog will make it even more delicious. When I lived in Korea I wasn t a hot dog lover, but since coming to the west I learned how to make them better, owing to a technique I learned from a sausage vendor in Toronto, and by adding my own fried kimchi. Also. the bun has to be toasted: a little crunchy on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. Enjoy the recipe, and let me know if you try it out!

When I was in Tokyo I wanted some awesome Japanese Sukiyaki (すき焼き). Get all the details here: http://migrationology.com/2014/05/yoshihashi-sukiyaki-tokyo/ Japanese sukiyaki (すき焼き) has always been a meal that I love, something that s just a great classic flavored dish that goes down well - I would call it a comfort dish. When I was in Tokyo I wanted to maximize the quality of food I could eat with my budget. So I did a lot of research and took my time to decided which restaurants to eat at, carefully. One day I really wanted to eat sukiyaki (すき焼き), and in an article in the Japan Times, I came across the suggestion for a restaurant known as Yoshihashi (よしはし). They mentioned this restaurant was extremely classy with prices to go with it - however, during the lunchtime, at one of the 12 bar seats, they offered an awesome lunch special a very affordable price. You can be sure I was the first in line at Yoshihashi (よしはし), and my mind and tongue were thrilled to sample their high class sukiyaki (すき焼き). As soon as we arrive to the restaurant I could see just how prestigious it was - there wasn t even a sign on the restaurant. It was just straight clean wood and minimal design. There was nobody waiting in line like at many other restaurants in Tokyo, but rather it just had a feeling of elegance and prestige. So as soon as the clock struck their open hour, we headed in, and then took our seats at the bar to eat sukiyaki (すき焼き). There was no menu in English, but I did my best to just order the normal version of the dish, nothing extra and no other requests. The waitress in a kimono served us a cup of green to begin with, without a hint of a smile, not in an unfriendly way but more in an elegant way. I wasn t sure if photos or videos were allowed inside Yoshihashi (よしはし) as at many Japanese restaurants they are concerned about such things. So I started off very calmly and tried to keep my voice extremely quiet despite my thrill of eating the awesome food. Our sukiyaki (すき焼き) came in about 10 minutes, and rather than being served in a hot pot style, it was served all assembled in a piping hot copper bowl. The main dish came with an egg and few small garnishes on the side. I whirled up my egg first and then started grabbing bites of the sukiyaki (すき焼き) and dipping them into the raw egg before eating. The beef, though not even their most high quality version, was outstanding. It was tender and literally just fell apart in my mouth leaving a flavor that was accented by soy sauce and rice wine. The flavors were delicate, but extremely smooth and I could taste the definite quality in their ingredients. We did manage to get enough of a video, but like I suspected, after a few minutes, the waitress did ask us not to take any more photos, so we stopped. Hopefully I captured enough of this awesome sukiyaki (すき焼き) meal at Yoshihashi (よしはし) to show a little picture of this awesome restaurant, the elegance, and the quality of the atmosphere and food. Dining at Yoshihashi (よしはし) was really an amazing experience, and for just $20 it was well worth it. By the way, dinner can cost around $200 or more. Yoshihashi (よしはし) Sukiyaki, Tokyo, Japan Address: 1-5-25 Moto-Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo How to get there: Take the Tokyo Metro (Ginza Line) to Asakasa-mitsuke station, take exit B, and walk straight out of the exit until you come to your first street. Make a right and walk down the road until you come to a Honda store. Turn left and walk almost to the end of the road, but just before that, on your left hand side you ll see a little side street (it almost looks like an alley). Turn left and you ll see Yoshihashi on your right hand side at the end of the alley. Open hours: 11:30 am -- 2 pm for lunch, Monday -- Saturday Price: 2,100 JPY ($20), a well spent $20 for a marvelous sukiyaki lunch and an elegant Japanese dining experience Tokyo food guide: http://migrationology.com/2014/03/tokyo-travel-guide-for-food-lovers/ Get my free street food guide: http://wp.me/Psd9b-4pl My premium food guides: http://www.eatingthaifood.com/guides/ T-shirts: http://migrationology.spreadshirt.com/ Eater at: http://migrationology.com/blog & http://www.eatingthaifood.com/blog/ Thank you for watching, and don t forget to subscribe: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=migrationology

Get all the details for this Thai fried rice recipe (khao pad goong ข้าวผัดกุ้ง) here: http://wp.me/p4a4F7-2kr Thai fried rice is a very typical street food dish in Thailand and you ll find it at any restaurant you go to. It s quite easy to make, and it s usually pretty tasty as well. You can order Thai fried rice with any kind of meat you want, but probably the most popular version is with shrimp, which we will be making in this recipe right here. When you make fried rice, if you don t have all the ingredients mentioned in this video, you can alternatively just find whatever you have in your fridge and use that. I ve made fried rice with all sorts of ingredients, like leftover grilled chicken or steak, and it turns out extremely delicious. So don t be too concerned about ingredients you have, but if you do happen to have fresh shrimp, it does taste amazing. Like with many stir fried dishes, the most important thing is to first prepare all of your ingredients. Peel the shrimp, chop up the onion, garlic, Chinese broccoli, or whatever other vegetables you re using, before you get started. For the rice, it s actually best to use day-old rice, as it has sort of dried out. However, if you only have fresh rice which has just been cooked, the best thing to do is put it in a bowl, and let it air dry for a while until it s completely cooled. If you fry fresh rice directly from the hot pot when it s still moist, it s much easier for the rice to stick to the pan - so that s why it s best to use cooled or day-old rice. In this Thai fried rice video, I ll also be preparing prik nam pla (พริกน้ำปลา), which is the famous Thai condiment of chilies mixed with fish sauce. You ll find this condiment at nearly every Thai street food restaurant, and it s an absolute must when it comes to Thai fried rice. That s what makes it uniquely Thai. Here are the ingredients you ll need to cook this Thai fried rice recipe: Fried Rice with Shrimp (Khao Pad Goong ข้าวผัดกุ้ง) 1.5 cups of cooked rice cooled (or day old rice works well too) - Or just estimate about 1 normal bowl full About 5 - 10 shrimp, head peeled, but tail on ¼ of a big white onion (or ½ of a very small white onion, like I used) 1 leaf of Chinese broccoli (or any crisp green leafy vegetable) 2 cloves garlic 1 egg ½ tablespoon soy sauce ½ tablespoon oyster sauce Pinch of sugar (optional) 1 tablespoon of oil for frying Prik Nam Pla (Chilies in Fish Sauce พริกน้ำปลา) 5 Thai chilies 3 tablespoons of fish sauce 1/2 of a lime Full Thai fried rice recipe (khao pad goong ข้าวผัดกุ้ง) here: http://wp.me/p4a4F7-2kr More authentic Thai recipes: http://www.eatingthaifood.com/thai-recipes/ Music in this video courtesy of Audio Network. Urine and feces have been a hot topic among Hong Kongers the past week, leading to Chinese netizens calling for a boycott of Hong Kong on June 1. It all began with a dispute between locals and Chinese mainland tourists over a toddler who reportedly answered the call of nature on a Hong Kong street. Videos of the clash went viral over the last week, stirring online uproar in both Hong Kong and the mainland, prompting Foreign Policy to brand the incident "bladdergate." Several video clips capturing the alleged event have spread around the Internet. In one, seen by CNN, A Hong Konger can be seen yelling "We have called the police," while the enraged father asks, "Do you have kids? Don t your kids need to pee?" The mother claimed not to know where the toilets were. MORE: China s first tourism law comes into effect, tourists issued manners guides Some locals came out in the parents defense, saying, "Don t scare the kid. It s not a big deal." The fiasco ends when the police arrive. The parents were arrested on suspicion of theft and assault, but were not charged. facebook.com/strictlydumpling @mikexingchen Subscribe to strictly dumpling http://www.youtube.com/user/strictlydumpling?sub_confirmation=1
