The buffet line at Kak Yan Nasi Campur in Langkawi was so good it was almost unbelievable. ►Check out my blog: http://migrationology.com/blog/ This vlog is from Day 7 of our Langkawi trip. We started the morning off at the hotel, and just finished some work before our driver picked us up at about 10:30 am. Our flight was at 1 pm, but before we caught our flight our of Langkawi, we need to have lunch. We drove directly over to a restaurant called Kak Yan Nasi Campur, famous throughout the island for serving rice and curry and an outstanding amount and supply of different dishes. To eat at Kak Yan Nasi Campur, you first grab your own plate, fill it with rice, and then you can go through the buffet line and scoop on as much food as you like. I wanted to taste some of everything, but that since there were probably about 50 different dishes, I decided to go for some of my favorites. The first thing I added to my plate was a grilled fish (ikan bakar), and then I proceed to add on some other fish curry, some vegetable curries, and a famous Langkawi food called bronok, which to my understanding is some kind of sea cucumber. Another part of eating nasi campur are all the fresh vegetables that you can get to garnish your food, and I also got a few scoops of the sambal shrimp paste chili sauce as well. Once you pile up your plate, they judge how much your plate costs by how much you took. Sometimes you may only have a plate for about 6 MYR and other times, if you take a lot of meat and fish like I did you’ll have a bill more like 12 - 13 MYR - but I can guarantee it’s worth it. I had no choice but to start with the bronok, which is some kind of a sea cucumber. The sea cucumber is sliced up raw and mixed with slices of green mango and onions and some spices as well. It’s one of the most famous dishes from Langkawi. I was expecting it to be more squishy and gelatinous, but on the contrary, it was very crisp, more like very firm squid or like a snail. That made me surprise from the start, but along with the crisp texture, the flavor ingredients of the salad were incredible. I could taste coconut, chilies, and green mango, which made the bronok salad incredible. Next I tried the ikan bakar, grilled fish, which was fantastic as always - fresh fish with a lovely roasted grilled flavor. The vegetables, which I’m not sure what they were, were crisp as well, and were nicely flavored with a hint of coconut milk. The eggplant was relatively plain, but it was nicely cooked so it was creamy all the way through. Another part of eating at Kak Yan Nasi Campur that I didn’t want to miss was eating the sambal chili sauces, combinations of shrimp paste and chilies and onions. Along with the garnishing vegetables and all the delicious curries, the sambal chili sauces were delicious. I loved our meal at Kak Yan Nasi Campur, it was the perfect way to end our trip to Langkawi. After finishing our nasi campur meal, we headed straight to the airport, checked it and after saying goodbye to all the amazing people we met and spent time with, we boarded our plane. The flight to Penang just took a little over 30 minutes and we arrive to Penang, got our bag, and took a taxi directly to George Town where I had booked a hotel the day before. We had an amazing 7 day trip to Langkawi, with so many memorable experiences, and delicious food. Thank you for watching these vlogs! ►Blog: http://migrationology.com/blog/ ►Follow on Instagram: http://instagram.com/migrationology Day 5 traveling in Langkawi was one of the best days so far, with an amazing mix of Malaysian food, museums, adventure sports, and finally ending the day with a dinner sunset cruise and a relax time at the natural jacuzzi spa. We started the day for breakfast at a restaurant called Nasi Dagang Pak Malau, a beautiful little restaurant on the edge of the rice field that serves a Malaysian food called nasi dagang. The owner and his wife and family were extremely nice, and they welcomed us to their restaurant and served us an outstanding restaurant. So far, this is probably my favorite restaurant in Langkawi. Nasi dagang is typically supposed to just be rice with fish curry, but I also added in a hunk of mutton korma to make things even better. The rice was fragrant and the curries were outstanding (full video coming soon). After a marvelous breakfast, we continued to Mahsuri s Tomb and Museum, which is a very famous place to visit. I’m not sure I fully understand the full story yet, but it’s about a girl named Mahsuri, who was so beautiful that she was the center of jealousy on Langkawi island. She was sentenced to death because of her beauty, and as she died she laid a curse on Langkawi saying the island would be barren and unproductive for 7 generations. Somehow, that turned to be true, and just recently Langkawi finished 7 generations and has now become extremely prosperous and is one of the biggest tourism destinations in Malaysian now. Naam Watersports is a fantastic watersports company in Langkawi, and they are extremely safe and knowledgeable about the sports they offer. It was my first time to go parasailing and it was an incredible experience. The views from above were amazing, and it was quite a thrilling ride as well. We spent a few minutes browsing through the Langkawi Craft Complex, and then went to the Mardi Agrotechnology Park, a fruit and vegetable farm. We took a short fruit tour, where we were able to see fruit trees, and then sample some fresh fruit right from the far. The farm was small, but fun to see, especially if you love fruit. For lunch we ate at Restoran Siti Fatimah, a local nasi campur (rice and curry) restaurant. I chose a few different fish dishes, piled them onto my rice, and ate them together with some herbs and chili sauce. This is one of my favorite styles of Malaysian food, it’s just so good. After spending a few minutes at a waterfall, we then drove to the boat jetty to catch our sunset dinner cruise with Naam Watersports aboard the Sea Falcon. It was by far the nicest boat I had ever been on. The views of the ocean and the peacefulness of being on the boat was the real highlight for me. It was an amazing experience! Full recipe & photos: http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/multigrain-rice Recipe also available in my cookbook: http://www.maangchi.com/real If you’ve been watching my videos for a while, you’ve probably seen me eating purple rice. Sometimes dark purple, or sometimes lavender, it has a beautiful color and stands out on any table. It’s Korean multigrain rice, called japgokbap in Korean. It’s a pretty simple recipe and there are many variations to it, and I will make it differently depending on my mood, but today I’m going to show you a version that is reliably beautiful and delicious.
►Blog: http://migrationology.com/blog/ ►Get my food and travel updates: http://migrationology.com/food-news/ Day 2 of food and attractions in Langkawi, here’s what we did: We started the day at The Andaman Hotel, and ate the buffet breakfast in the morning. The food was quite good and the buffet was very extensive. There’s nothing I enjoy doing more than eating fish curry for breakfast. After breakfast we drove to the SkyCab, which is one of Langkawi’s most famous attractions, a cable car that goes up the side of the second highest peak in Langkawi. We took a ride on the glass bottom gondola car, and the ride took about 10 or 15 minutes to reach the top. I especially liked the glass bottom to get views of what was below us as well. At the top of the Langkawi SkyCab there is another attraction called the SkyBridge, bridge that spans from one peak to the next. It was pretty cool to walk along the bridge and enjoy the view. Also, located in the same complex, we went to Art In Paradise, which was a painting museum the are made for taking photos. So you stand in front of the painting and take photos - it was quite well done. For lunch we went to Malaysia 1 Restoran and went to a restaurant called Mr. Asam Pedas, who specializes in a Malaysian food called asam pedas, a spicy and sour curry. I had the asam pedas with fish, which was incredibly good - the flavors of the curry were extremely good, and I loved all the herbs and spices included. One of the main reasons my wife and I were invited to Langkawi was to attend the Langkawi Laksa Carnival, a festival celebrating the dish of laksa, which is a number of different types of noodles and curry. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but today was the opening ceremony and so we first walked around and ate some amazing noodles - some Chinese hand pulled noodles, and a laksa from the Malaysian state of Kelantan, both of which were extremely good. I was then asked to be part of a simple cooking competition, and though I had no idea what I was doing, it was a lot of fun. After the Laksa Carnival opening, we then went to Ayer Hangat Night Market, which is a local food market on Friday night. Everything looked delicious, but I had to go with a dish called nasi kerabu, rice with toasted coconut and herbs, and then I chose some fish and fish cakes to go on top. We also had beef curry with sticky rice which was also delicious. The food at Ayer Hangat Night Market was fantastic! My wife and I are based in Bangkok, so we woke up early to catch our flight from Bangkok to Langkawi, and we arrived just in time for lunch. After grabbing our bag from Langkawi airport we jumped in the car and took a drive to Seashells Restaurant, located in laman padi, a rice field. The setting of the restaurant was really nice, with wooden cabanas built over the top of a rice field. We ordered a few different nasi campur dishes, including daging kurma, a beef and coconut milk curry and ayam masak merah, a red chicken curry as well, and we also got some other chicken curry, omelet, and finally both fried fish and Malaysian grilled fish known as ikan bakar. I thought the food was over quite good, and the setting inside the rice field was also very nice. Lunch accomplished we headed to The Andaman hotel, located on the very northwestern side of Langkawi island. But on the way driving there, we stopped at a local food stall where we enjoyed a few local deep fried snacks and fritters and a donut. I’ll admit, even though I’m not a big sweets fan, that everything was quite tasty - I especially liked the little deep fried banana bread balls. The Andaman is a very nice hotel, with a private stretch of beach, and so the first thing, after walking around the hotel was to take a swim. After the swim, we ate dinner at Jala Restaurant, a restaurant that’s located at The Andaman hotel. It was a great day traveling from Bangkok to Langkawi, and thank you to Naturally Langkawi for organizing this trip.
