I’m in the process of checking out some Bangkok attractions to include in my new version of my Bangkok eBook (http://migrationology.com/ebook-101-things-to-do-in-bangkok/), and so today Ying and I headed out for a day of sightseeing and eating in Bangkok. For more information about visiting Bangkok visit http://migrationology.com/ and http://www.eatingthaifood.com/ I’ve described each place we visited in this Bangkok vlog with a time code so you can jump to one of those place if you’d need to. 1:38 Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งอภิเศกดุสิต) We started at Victory Monument, and from there we jumped in a bus and rode to an area called Dusit to go to our first stop: Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งอภิเศกดุสิต). From where the bus dropped us off, we walked through the Vimanmek Mansion (another amazing Bangkok attraction you should visit) to get there. The Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งอภิเศกดุสิต) was built by the King of Thailand who at the time had just come back from Europe. So as you can see from the appearance and architecture of the building if has a lot of European influence, yet at the same time the overall materials and structure remains traditional Thai. 2:28 Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม) From the Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งอภิเศกดุสิต) we continued on just a short distance to the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม), another iconic attraction in Bangkok. The Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม) is the official Royal Throne Hall, and it’s still used today, so that’s why it’s very strict for dress code and for taking photo (or not allowing for taking photos inside). Once you pay the entrance fee, which cost 150 Thai Baht, you can then go inside and take a tour. Inside you’ll find an impressive collection of Royal Thai memorabilia, including a range of Royal thrones, a beautiful collection of artwork, and you can also just admire the overall beauty of the construction and architecture of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม). From the outside, the Neoclassical building looks like it could be somewhere in Europe, but step inside and look up at the paintings and murals on the walls, and you’ll know you’re in Thailand. It was my first time to visit the Throng Hall, and it was well worth visiting, a pretty amazing attraction to see. 3:47 Thai boat noodles at Kuay Teow Nai Beum (ร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวนายเบิ้ม) After visiting both Throne Halls, we were starting to get hungry, so being in Dusit we took a walk over to a restaurant to eat Thai boat noodles, one of the most popular versions of Thai noodles. It was my first time to visit this boat noodle restaurant, but it was very good. Some of the central boat noodle restaurants, especially at boat noodle alley have been losing their flavor in the last few years, but this restaurant was excellent. 7:17 Fried pork at May Da Moo Tod (เมตตาหมูทอด) Right around the corner from where we ate boat noodles, Ying and I went to get some fried pork and sticky rice, a place we’d been a few years ago, so decided to go again. It was delicious. 10:14 Bangkok National Museum I had always seen the Bangkok National Museum from the outside but never gone inside, so today we went to the Bangkok National Museum. After paying my entrance fee of 200 Thai Baht, which I think is well worth the price, we walked around the different galleries. It’s an impressive museum with a huge collection and if you enjoy museums, this is one of the Bangkok attractions you don’t want to miss. 12:18 Sala Calermkrung Royal Theater (ศาลาเฉลิมกรุง) Finally to end the long day in Bangkok we bought tickets at Sala Calermkrung Royal Theater (ศาลาเฉลิมกรุง) to attend a Thai traditional theater performance of Hanuman. The show, which lasted for 2 hours and showed a lot of Thai culture through theater, was really good. I would highly recommend it. Our entrance price tickets were 800 THB. Get the recipe for Thai seafood sauce, and see more of our Thai seafood feast here: http://www.eatingthaifood.com/2015/07/thai-seafood-sauce-recipe/ One of the reasons we had to come back from Koh Samui so soon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKWr14KES6Q&index=1&list=PLeoy0zUu6bqlq-PMy4IrIwLBkjq6IEJ7t) was because my wife Ying had already made plans months ago with her sister’s and family to take a quick family vacation to a beach house in Pattaya, about an hour from Bangkok on the beach. I really didn’t have much of a clue what we were going to do at the beginning of the day, all I knew is that we rented a car, we were heading to Pattaya, and I was driving. We left Bangkok at about 8 am after picking up our car, and after getting out of Bangkok we drove to Chonburi, and more specifically to an area called Ang Sila to go to Ang Sila Market (ตลาดอ่างศิลา), one of the best fresh fish and seafood markets in the area. I think it was my first time to go to this market, and I was pretty excited, not only because I love going to markets, but also because I love seafood. Ang Sila Market (อ่างศิลา) is a pretty good sized seafood market, and they have a variety of both dried seafood and snacks, and fresh seafood. We went to the market for the fresh seafood. I was walking around filming and taking as many photo as I could, but my wife and her family started shopping for our Thai seafood feast. They bought a bunch of seafood, probably more than I can remember. This was going to turn out to be a great Thai family vacation to Pattaya! We got back into the car and drive to Pattaya and arrived to our hotel - a family style beach house at a place called Moonlight On The Sea Resort. Our house was pretty basic, but it was quite nice, facing the sea, with 4 rooms I think, and a really nice open downstairs and full kitchen. It was the type of house that was made for an entire family or a group of friends to come and hang out and eat and enjoy a peaceful side of Pattaya. The house also happened to be right next to the famous Sanctuary of Truth Pattaya - although we didn’t go inside because it has a pretty high entrance fee. After arriving to the beachhouse and checking in, we got straight to cooking all the seafood - ok, they all got straight to cooking, and I watched and took as many photos and videos as I could. Thai seafood sauce recipe: Be sure to read the full blog post, which includes a Thai seafood sauce recipe, here: But I just want to say that one of the best ways to enjoy Thai seafood is to just cook it plain, either boil, grill, or steam, or anything plain, and eat it with what in Thai is called nam jim seafood, or seafood sauce. As long as you have a big bowl of Thai seafood sauce you can cook the seafood completely plain, and you’ll be able to have an amazing Thai seafood meal. Here are the ingredients for this recipe: Just crush or grind the garlic and chilies, then mix everything else together in a bowl. You’re not done yet. Part of cooking Thai food is taste testing. You need to taste test to make sure it’s the balance of flavors you’re after. I like mine more sour and spicy, while my family likes it sweeter. So keep mixing and matching until you’ve got a perfect Thai seafood sauce. Let the recipe ingredients just be a guide. That was really it for the day for this family vacation to Pattaya. I had a great time at Ang Sila Market (อ่างศิลา), and our seafood feast was incredible. For more details about traveling to Koh Samui head over to my blog at http://migrationology.com/. Day 4 in Koh Samui, we stayed at Lazy Days Samui Beach Resort, just down the beach from Lamai and only a 5 minute walk from Hin Ta Hin Ya, the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. After waking up and having breakfast, I had some work I needed to get done, so we sat in the room for a while and did some work until leaving at about 10 am to go to Hin Ta Hin Yai (หินตาหินยาย), which is one of the most famous landmarks and attractions in Koh Samui. Since we were staying on the other side of Hin Ta Hin Yai (หินตาหินยาย) from the main entrance, we came kind of the back way, up the side of the beach and had to do a little rock climbing to the viewpoint. It was pretty obvious to see where Hin Ta Hin Yai (หินตาหินยาย), the Grandfather and Grandmother rocks were located. I thought Grandfather rock looked like it, but Grandmother rock was like any other rock in the world. Anyway, it’s one of the most famous viewpoints in Koh Samui, and it’s often included in all the tours of the island. I think it was worth a quick visit. After Hin Ta Hin Yai (หินตาหินยาย), we took a walk over to Lamai beach and walked along the ocean. I think the ocean at Lamai beach was better than at our hotel, which was just one rock beyond Lamai. For lunch we headed over to Sabeinglae Restaurant (เสบียงเล), one of the most famous restaurants in Koh Samui for seafood and for Samui speciality dishes. It’s a nicer end restaurant, not a street food restaurant, but after yesterday’s bad meal, I was ready to eat a delicious meal. Most of the menu was in both Thai and English, but I noticed that there were a few items that were only listed in Thai - maybe they thought only Thais would enjoy them? Anyway, we ordered some of the speciality foods at Sabeinglae Restaurant (เสบียงเล). Wai khua (วายคั่ว), squid in coconut milk, which was not really a curry, but more of a just a thick coconut gravy, was one of my favorite dishes of our meal - the squid was so incredibly tender and the sauce was extremely buttery. Another special dish at is Sabeinglae Restaurant (เสบียงเล) moo khua koy (หมูคั่วเคย), pork stir fried with shrimp paste - krill shrimp paste. I didn’t care for it, it was way too sweet - it almost tasted like pork fried with applesauce. Finally, I just couldn’t resist ordering a red snapper steamed with lime juice, chilies and and garlic (ปลาแดงนึ่งมะนาว). The fish was fresh, and it was excellent. Overall, the food at Sabeinglae Restaurant (เสบียงเล) was pretty good. I didn’t care for the pork dish, but the seafoods dishes were all quite good. It was a little expensive, but it was our splurge meal for our trip to Koh Samui. For dinner that night, we just had a simple meal at a restaurant down the road from our hotel. Sabeinglae Restaurant (เสบียงเล) is located right next to Hin Ta Hin Yai in Koh Samui. 077-233-082, 077-233-083 That completes Day 4 of our short trip to Koh Samui. ************************************************************************* Music in this video is from Audio Network This travel food video was filmed and produced by Mark Wiens and Ying Wiens, check out our blogs: http://migrationology.com/blog & http://www.eatingthaifood.com/ & http://www.travelbyying.com/ SNAPCHAT: migrationology Twitter: https://twitter.com/migrationology Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationology Instagram: https://instagram.com/migrationology Resources I use: http://migrationology.com/travel-resources/ Travel guides: http://migrationology.com/travel-guides/

On Day 2 in Koh Samui (be sure to check out Day 1 if you haven’t already: ) we woke up after a great night’s sleep at Santiburi Beach Resort. The first thing I did in the morning was take a morning swim - one of the best times to take a swim with the sun is not strong, the water is calm, and it’s peaceful and quiet. After a swim in the ocean at Mae Nam beach, we continued onto breakfast at the hotel. Breakfast was a buffet style, and it was pretty typically of any hotel buffet - including all the stations of different types of food. I went straight for the omelet, and loaded it with chilies and fish sauce. Breakfast was excellent. After finishing breakfast, we headed to Santiburi Country Club to take a quick tour of their golf course. The course is the only full course on Koh Samui, and it’s considered to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Thailand. We drove around the course on a golf cart, stopping at some of the main holes to get a wonderful view of Koh Samui. Then it was time for lunch… and this turned out to be one of the best lunches and probably the best meals I had in Koh Samui. Food in Koh Samui is sort of hard - there are many Thai restaurants that cater to tourists, and at those restaurant the food can be good, but it also might not be that good. It really depends. But in my opinion, one of the best ways to find the best restaurants in Koh Samui for local southern Thai food is to go to the roadside, or neighborhood local curry and rice restaurants, in Thai called Khao Gaeng. Recommended by some staff from our hotel, we headed over to Lan Saka (ร้านลานสกา) for lunch. We arrived right at lunch time, so the restaurant was busy and unfortunately some of the dishes had already sold out. But they still have plenty of curry left, and so Ying and I ordered a nice selection of different southern Thai food to eat. We ended up ordering about 5 different dishes. The gaeng moo (แกงหมู), pork curry, was curried in a thick and rich coconut milk curry and the curry paste flavor was vibrant. We also ordered a chicken curry which was equally as good. All the other dishes were also excellent, and it really was probably the best Thai meal I had in Koh Samui. After lunch at Lan Saka (ร้านลานสกา) restaurant, we headed back to Santiburi and just hung around all afternoon enjoying the beautiful atmosphere and transferring to different lounge positions. It was an excellent day in Koh Samui. That completes Day 2 of our short trip to Koh Samui. ************************************************************************* Music in this video is from Audio Network This travel food video was filmed and produced by Mark Wiens and Ying Wiens, check out our blogs: http://migrationology.com/blog & http://www.eatingthaifood.com/ & http://www.travelbyying.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationology Instagram: https://instagram.com/migrationology Twitter: https://twitter.com/migrationology SNAPCHAT: migrationology Resources I use: http://migrationology.com/travel-resources/ Travel guides: http://migrationology.com/travel-guides/ NOTE: I was invited to stay at Santiburi Beach Resort (http://www.agoda.com/santiburi-beach-resort-spa/hotel/samui-th.html?CID=1452029 affiliate link) from my blog (http://migrationology.com/), not from my videos. Read more about getting from Bangkok to Koh Samui and where we stayed here: http://migrationology.com/2015/07/santiburi-beach-resort-koh-samui/ My wife Ying and I were invited to stay at Santiburi Beach Resort (http://www.agoda.com/santiburi-beach-resort-spa/hotel/samui-th.html?CID=1452029 affiliate link) on the island of Koh Samui for a couple of nights, and since neither of us had ever been to Koh Samui, we decided to go for it. How to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui: There are a number of different options, depending on how much you want to spend and how much time you want to take. The fastest and most expensive way is to take a direct flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui on either Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways. The cheaper way to go is to take a flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani (สุราษฎร์ธานี), then take a bus to Donsak pier, and then take a ferry to Koh Samui - that’s what we did. You could also alternatively take a bus to Surat and do the same thing. We took a flight with Air Asia, which took 1 hour, then we took a bus which took another 1.5 hours to the ferry terminal. Then we had a 45 minute layover, and took the Seatran Ferry to Koh Samui which also took 1.5 hours. We left Bangkok at about 7 am and arrived in Koh Samui just after noon. For our first lunch, we headed to a restaurant right at Nathon in Koh Samui just a 10 minute walk from the ferry. The food was alright, but not anything amazing. The best dish for me was the gaeng som, sour curry with turmeric and fish. That was pretty good, but the rest of the food was alright at best. After having a quick lunch, Ying and I jumped in the back of a rot songthaew (the back of the truck pickup public transportation in Thailand) and headed north to a beach on Koh Samui called Mae Nam. We got dropped off right in front of Santiburi Beach Resort and then walked into our resort for the next 2 nights. Santiburi Beach Resort was incredible - and we had an ocean view villa right on the beach. The inside of our villa was probably the nicest place I’ve ever stayed. The design was elegant Thai, and there was an open seating room, then the main bedroom, and a giant bathroom with a circular tub, two sinks, and a huge walk in closet. Just outside the shower was a private courtyard with out own personal swimming pool. Santiburi Beach Resort was was even better outside - the grounds were well manicured with tropical flowers and plants, and the beach was perfectly maintained, quiet, and with a nice view of Koh Pha Ngan in the background. The water was beautiful. They invited us to try the spa, so that afternoon we went to enjoy the spa and I had the most amazing spa massage I’ve ever had - but I’ve only had a massage a few times in my life - nevertheless it was amazing. For dinner we ate at Santiburi Beach Resort and their beachside restaurant called Rim Talay. Overlooking the beach, it was a beautiful atmosphere and they served international food. The food was overall very good.
