This opens a Pandora’s box of questions, one of which entails risk assessment in relation to our off-road motorbike lifestyle – how do we justify the risk of getting injured in relation to living a long, healthy life. Australian Crosstraining Enduro Gumby, Barry Morris, was struggling with these ideas, so instead of the usual routine of hiding under the bed, he asked our in-house spiritual leader, Preacher Bob, for guidance. Preacher Bob: Yes, there are many who are scared of risk and the suffering it might bring. But, in seeking to prolong their life by avoiding pain, these ones become trapped by their own timidity and fears. In truth, a well-lived life welcomes adventure in its many forms and, with it, the unknown. It is thus we learn to be at ease with risk and to embrace pain. GOZ: Embrace pain? Are you serious, Master? I have broken bones twice now, and it was not an enjoyable experience. PB: Pain is a natural and inevitable step in achieving anything good. So embrace discomfort, knowing that ultimately it is you that is being shaped at that very moment. GOZ: Forgive my impertinence, Master, but you re joking, right? Personally, I can t see what spiritual enlightenment will result from my fingers getting caught between the chain and the rear sprocket. PB: Do not hide behind an extreme example, Grasshopper. Although we should not seek suffering, all who have experienced injury know that, if we let it, it can work to hone and refine our character. Moreover, what seems to us a negative incident can impart wisdom and clarity, allowing us to make sage choices in the future. The enlightened rider possesses the capacity to ably assess the risks of a new venture, and choose to accept or deny them, before twisting it to the stop. GOZ: Forgive my spiritual blindness, Master. I may be starting to understand your wisdom now. You are saying we are not to seek suffering as a good unto itself, but we must understand that a good life entails risks. And if we suffer the consequences of our choices, we should accept them, not whine and whinge like a spoiled child. Pain is part of the adventure that is life. Am I getting the gist of it now? PB: Indeed. Anyone who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears. And while pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. I sense that you are passing through the gates of Deeper Knowledge W.F.O.[AM2] -[DS3] be careful of the trees as you proceed. GOZ: So, what of the gutless yellow-bellies who won t even go near a motorbike and instead live their lives as if wrapped up in cotton wool? PB: Be not quick to judge, Grasshopper. Each of us walk our own path in life. These others may bravely face challenges of a different sort that would have you wetting your pants and crying like a baby. Our level of comfort with risk - whether we shy away from it or seek ever-greater thrills - is more than simply a matter of personal choice. Though we like to believe the contrary, few of us truly choose how to live our life. Our very chemical make-up and deeply rooted primeval memories of good and bad shape how we view and respond to new stimuli. Our DNA, our parents, our family, our community, and our culture all instill in us an appreciation of risk. GOZ: Wow, this is some very deep crap, Master. I now see I have been excessively judgmental toward the gutless motorbike-hating yellow-bellies. I probably should not criticize someone until I ve walked a mile in their shoes, or maybe ridden three kilometers on their knobbies. PB: You draw ever closer to the light, Grasshopper. Pain is temporary, but quitting is forever. GOZ: I thank you, O Wise One. Might I now ask for your blessing?
