http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com http://tractionerag.com Can you ride four strokes in hard enduros? Can you do cross training on a four stroke? Are four strokes okay for slow technical terrain? Yes. And no. Yes you can enter hard enduros on a four stroke. Gone are the days you would occasionally see top riders on a thumper. But you will still see a few in the lower classes. Two strokes are definitely more suitable for hard enduro. Why? Two strokes are far less likely to overheat in slow difficult terrain. Two strokes are lighter, very useful when lifting bikes around. Two strokes are far less likely to stall, important when you are slipping the clutch so much four strokes in hard enduro. They also have a lot more bottom end grunt which is great in gnarly terrain. And finally there are less things to go wrong with a two stroke. If you are dead serious about hard enduro, then two strokes will be the way to go.This is our dirt muppet Ben three years ago, on his Yamaha WR450F. He wanted to learn hard enduro techniques. And while the WR450F isn t the best bike for this, he figured he would keep learning on the four stroke for a while because it would force him to learn the techiques even better. Three years ago we found it quite embarrassing... we were all only our European 300 two strokes, and yet often Ben could outride us in gnarly terrain with his WR450F. When Ben did finally swap over to a two stroke, it certainly helped but we didn t see a massive jump in his ability. But what about your average dirt muppet? What if you ride your bike out to the trails? What if you also do dual sport riding, and want a bike that can do both? Sometimes a four stroke can be an acceptable compromise. More difficult? Definitely. But if you love a challenge, and really want to make sure your technique is good, why not? Finally if you are doing technical terrain on four strokes here are some tips that might help. To minimise stalling with four strokes in hard enduro, try setting your idle speed high, look into a Midwest clutch lever, and if you have a big fuel injected thumper with snappy throttle response, look at the G2 Throttle Tamer. Keep your bike s weight down four strokes in hard enduro by not overloading it with useless bling. And on shorter rides, just half fill the fuel tank. This can make a surprising difference. Any other suggestions? Leave them in the comments. The important thing to remember is the bike you ride is only part of the equation. Your skills and technique are far more important. Remember your skills will always be the most important thing. My experience was similar. I actually started this cross training gig on a Husaberg FE570. Heavy? Yes. Inclined to stall and overheat with four strokes in hard enduro? Yes. But I just saw an inappropriate bike as a way to force myself to learn the skills even faster if I was riding with guys on two strokes. A few years later, I actually went back to a four stroke. I was keen to see if you could do slow technical terrain on a big thumper, and also be able to do some dual sport riding. Again, I was surprised at what you can do with four strokes in hard enduro like the Beta RR480. Yes I was stalling a lot initially. But I just kept working on my clutch skills with four strokes in hard enduro. Yes it would occasionally overheat. But it forced me to continue my momentum and ride smoothly at fairly low revs to minimise overheating. And of course it was a lot heavier. But I was always amazed at what you could still do on a big thumper. It really is 80% the rider, 20% the bike. Occasionally I have even tried some of the cross training techniques on the old bushpig the DR650. Four strokes in hard enduro! Front Flips on ski jumps are nothing new for Fabian Bösch – in 2016 he already stomped a Front Flip on the significantly smaller ski jumping hill in Einsiedeln, Switzerland. The Gross-Titlis-Schanze hill is notorious for being the steepest in the whole World Cup circuit, with a 36-degree incline usually bringing ski jumpers up to the incredible speed of 90kph on their run in to launch. This time, however, it was freeskier Fabian Bösch standing at the top of the jump. And as we all know Fabi, simply launching from his local ski jumping hill in a traditional manner ain t gonna cut it.
