Like many in our community, Teton Gravity athletes and cinematographers are drawn to explore those wild places where we feel most alive. Like clockwork, TGR makes an annual pilgrimage to Alaska’s jagged, snow-capped ridges to get a taste of some of the steepest lines in North America. Filming in remote locations often requires weeks, if not months, of diligent planning and logistics preparation. But all of that blood, sweat and tears can count for naught if the conditions aren t right. And the conditions aren’t right a lot. Having the self-awareness and control to step away from a line when the conditions are unstable is as much of a victory as actually skiing it. Lucky for us, our athletes know how to have a little fun in between shooting days on the mountain. Sometimes bonfires, cold plunges in frigid north pacific ocean, and frisbee golf are all you need to have a good time (Parkin Costain tells us he actually considered retiring from skiing to pursue a full time career in frisbee golf after this trip). When it comes to big-mountain free riding, there’s pretty much no better place on the planet than the Chugach Range of Alaska. Every year, countless athletes make the pilgrimage to the coastal mountains of Alaska to paint lines down impossibly steep faces. However, capturing that action isn’t for the faint of heart - but it’s a craft that TGR has been honing for decades now. With the help of the experts at Points North Heliskiing in Cordova, Alaska, Griffin Post, Michelle Parker and the TGR crew were treated to the session of a lifetime. Of course, it’s Alaska, and the weather doesn’t always play ball. That’s when the crew resorts to alternate tactics for entertainment - riding at the local ski hill, sampling some fresh seafood, or getting into rap battles with the film crew. If you ski or snowboard Verbier, Switzerland and find yourself on Mont Fort, you can either take the advanced slope down or go "hors piste," which means "outside the ski area boundary." That s what I did. There were so many more lines to choose from. Total adventure. The key is to know where you re going and it s best to have a partner for safety. I linked up with a snowboarder the second time that I did it. For boarders, there is some flat terrain, so you may have to walk at some point. Unless you split board and hike to the back country. Either way, I think it is totally worth it. The "hors piste" terrain is less traveled and more advanced than the "in bounds" slopes. The scenery is even better than what you see throughout Les 4 Vallees.

Born and raised in Anchorage, professional skier Tim Durtschi is no stranger to Alaska’s towering mountain ranges. The Chugach Mountains, the picturesque peaks that loom over Anchorage’s horizon, are only one of the fourteen mountain ranges within the state’s borders. The Chugach range alone is larger than Switzerland, and much of the eastern section of the range is incredibly isolated and inhospitable; devoid of infrastructure and public accessibility. But for Durtschi, the Chugach Range is home. Having learned to ski at the early age of two at Alyeska, Alaska’s premiere ski resort just a 45 minute drive south of Anchorage, advancing to the unnamed peaks deep within the Chugach range was a natural progression.
