Architect Wanda Ely seamlessly blends different styles in this unique family home. See how she took both of the homeowners’ requests into account to create a space that’s practical and stylish. Partners Jennifer Horvath and Shawn Winsor had different priorities when it came to renovating their home. Shawn is a design enthusiast, whereas Jennifer is most concerned with having a space that’s functional for the family. Wanda blended form and function to create a space they both love. The kitchen, dining area and mudroom are modern and graphic with black accents and bold tile. The modern kitchen is also full of storage and has a large island that’s perfect for cooking family meals. A handsome library sitting room has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a more traditional, sophisticated look than the rest of the house, yet flows together beautifully.

Designer Karen Cole brings warmth, light and style to a family kitchen with modern stone finishes and pops of wood and brass. Learn how she created a functional and elegant space by removing barriers and dividing the kitchen into zones, including a sit-in TV area and workspace. Karen removed a block of cabinets that closed off the space and replaced it with convenient built-in storage. She relied on a mix of elements, from wood to marble and even faux concrete wallpaper, to bring in the warmth it desperately needed. The sitting and TV area is made up of a cosy rug with two chairs and tall steel doors with white linen curtains that shine light into the space. A zone that doubles as a breakfast area and workspace is set off to the side. Heated stone flooring is used throughout. The result is an elegant and modern kitchen that’s functional for a busy family.

See how designer Emily Griffin used beadboard panelling, antiques and a watery palette to transform a drab cottage into a stylish summer house. Emily started by replacing the drywall throughout the main living areas with beadboard panelling. She created a welcoming entryway with a country vibe by bringing in an antique bench and vintage-look mirror. The kitchen and dining areas were combined to create an open-concept space with a nine-foot dining table in the center. A servery tucked into the corner features reclaimed wood shelves. Just off the kitchen is a sitting room, where a stone fireplace steals the show. In the sunroom, a minimalist approach was taken to let the natural surroundings shine. Upstairs, the master bedroom has a sophisticated feel, thanks to quiet, patterned wallpaper and a colonial-style bed. Emily took the ensuite bathroom down to the studs and added a new window, herringbone floors and shiplap walls. Montreal- and New York-based designer Garrow Kedigian is known for his fearless use of pattern and color. Tour inside his luxurious and layered Montreal home that will have you craving a fresh coat of paint. Built in the 1920s by a British architect, Garrow’s home is inspired by terraced houses in London. The 5,500-square-foot space features a gracious living room with symmetrical black-framed windows, grand furniture, a fireplace and a geometric Greek key carpet. To enhance the beautiful architecture — thanks to high ceilings, wall panelling and crown molding — Garrow painted the walls in rich, saturated hues. The multi-purpose dining space is painted a deep teal, while a dining banquette with a modern glass-top table keeps the room airy and light. In the small, but efficient kitchen, black-painted cabinets and a mirrored backsplash add personality. Up the impressive staircase is a master suite, which has a regal four-poster canopy bed, and a charming sitting room. A hidden third floor houses Garrow’s “writing room” with chalk-panel walls, and a guest bedroom that plays with color. A young couple in their thirties enlists designer Christine Elliott to make their new small house feel more refined and bespoke. See how she brings her clients’ style to this space using traditional pieces and elegant details. The couple purchased the home to serve as a transitional space until they get a custom build, so a large renovation wasn’t in the cards. Christine used paint to transform the rooms, and brought in pieces the couple can take with them when they move. In the dining room, wall panelling elevates the room and makes the ceiling feel taller. A monochromatic parlor just off the dining room has navy walls and a blue ceiling, creating a cozy spot to enjoy post-dinner cocktails. Christine brightened the kitchen by painting the burgundy cabinets a fresh white, swapping the backsplash and incorporating luxe lighting. H&H‘s Lauren Petroff and Kai Ethier demonstrate the power of color! They each chose their favorite CIL shade and styled a vignette around it, and then swapped the furniture and accessories for a completely different look. Lauren chose CIL’s Icy Teal to create a beachy, boho bedroom with a mix of patterns in purple and pink hues. Meanwhile, Kai went bold with CIL’s Charcoal Coast for a loft-style dining room, complete with mid-century modern furniture and global accessories including a Moroccan rug. Once the designers switched the furniture and accessories, Lauren’s bedroom looked cozier against the dark wall, while Kai’s dining room took on more of a relaxed feel. Ultimately, both vignettes worked beautifully with both hues. Presented by CIL.

Architect Darcie Watson transforms a former B&B into a striking modern home that doesn’t shut the door on its past.
